Eventually after use, over washing, or letting your cutting board SIT IN WATER, it may need to be refinished. But how do you know if your cutting board needs to be refinished or how would you do this? As always we do offer refinishing services, especially on our products just get in contact with us. But if you want to do it yourself here is how! First you need to know what to look for. Given time all wood cutting boards will get wear marks and cuts in them. That is how you know you are not damaging, denting or dulling your knives. Cut marks can usually be sanded down to either make them less noticeable or get rid of them completely, though cut marks don’t present the cutting board any additional risk of damage. If a cutting board is left in water can cause splintering. But most of us here enjoy the look of a well used cutting board.
If you do want to refinish your cutting board at home, I would suggest using a sanding block or flat surface, and use 80,120,220 and finally a 400 grit sand paper or finishing pad. If you have any type of orbital sander you can use that too. Be sure to sand the board evenly to avoid pitting where water can sit. When you are done sanding it is critical to re-oil your board with a clean rag or paper towel. You may have to repeat the oiling process, a freshly sanded surface will be more prone to drying out because it has not been oiled before.
Our process for refinishing boards is roughly similar, unless there are a large number of deep gouges. Then we may run the board though our planner in order to re-flatten the surface and then re-sand.
I am hoping to have a resurfacing video some time soon to show our process!
